The Farm
Hawthorne Valley Farm
is a 400-acre, diversified biodynamic farm
across the street from the Hawthorne Valley School. The Farm is virtually
self-sufficient, relying on its own feeds and compost and, in keeping
with the tenets of biodynamic farming - which treats the
land as a living organism - no fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides
are used.
Integrating agriculture with education
is an important component of our mission, and having the School and Farm
share this valley is an ideal
learning environment for students and teachers, children and adults.
We also work closely with the Visiting Students Program, and we welcome
any opportunity to bring people to the Farm.
Hawthorne Valley Farm
is comprised of several different departments, all of which operate under
the Farm's common management
structure. The
Farm (dairy herd, gardens, and pasture land), certified organic and biodynamic dairy
processing plant (which makes yogurt, cheese, and quark from our cows'
milk and bottles raw milk), Green Market (our farm
stand at Union Square in New York City), Community Supported Agriculture
program (provides vegetables to 220 members locally and in the New York
City area for almost six months of the year), certified organic Bakery
(breads, rolls, and pastries made with organic and biodynamic ingredients
and fresh-ground flour), and complete grocery Farm Store work together
toward attaining Hawthorne Valley Farm's vision of "nurturing
the land that nourishes us."
